Experiential Therapy with CERTS

These therapeutic techniques get students involved in their healing journey by including them in a process of creativity and interaction. Our experiential therapy process at CERTS allows our students to develop an insight into their inner thoughts, feelings, and experiences allowing them to learn how to process their emotions in a healthy way. Let’s take a look into our teen mental health programs at CERTS and how each one uses experiential therapy.

Kolob Canyon

Our treatment program, Kolob Canyon, is a small group setting that uses intensive therapy and supportive academics. At Kolob Canyon, CERTS offers equine therapy, adventure therapy, trauma sensitive yoga, and art therapy.

Equine-Assisted Therapy

Equine-assisted therapy includes caring for and riding horses. This type of experiential therapy helps our students grow physically, emotionally, and occupationally. Equine-assisted therapy can give students insight into their interpersonal relationships, helping them better understand how they react to new situations. It also teaches students how to regulate their emotions and behaviors based on the instant feedback and nonverbal cues from the horse. Equine-assisted therapy also models healthy relationships for students struggling with self-awareness or relationship-building skills. Another way this experiential therapy can help students is through the growth of trust and dependability by taking care of a horse.

La Europa Academy

In our residential treatment center, La Europa Academy, students take part in creative experiential therapies like art therapy, music therapy, dance/movement therapy, and sand tray therapy.

Art Therapy

Art therapy uses the creative process of making art to help individuals better understand their personality, abilities, concerns, conflicts, and emotions. This type of experiential therapy can help individuals who need a more visual or hands-on approach when it comes to therapy. Art therapy can help individuals who struggle with anxiety, expressing emotions, depression, problem solving, and self-awareness.

Music Therapy

Music therapy uses music to inspire positive changes in the therapy recipients. Music therapy can help individuals address their physical, emotional, cognitive and social needs. This therapeutic approach can help individuals struggling with stress, anxiety, and depression.

Dance/Movement Therapy

Dance or movement therapy, or DMT, incorporates dance to help individuals further their understanding of their physical, cognitive, social, and emotional needs. This experiential therapy allows the mind, body, and spirit to connect, improving the individual’s feelings, emotions, and behavior. Dance therapy is designed for individuals who struggle with self-esteem, body image, communication skills, relationship building, and behavioral issues. DMT also introduces a new way for individuals to cope with negative feelings and behaviors.

Moonridge Academy

Moonridge Academy uses extensive experiential therapy like adventure therapy, equine therapy, art therapy, sandy tray therapy, and trauma sensitive yoga. This treatment program at CERTS helps students explore their mental health struggles in an exciting way.

Adventure Therapy

Adventure therapy is a type of therapy that uses adventure experiences to help people grow and heal. Adventure Therapy can be used to help people overcome challenges, learn new skills, build confidence, and work together all while moderating their own behaviors and emotions. This experiential therapy focuses on what makes an individual successful, improving their self-esteem and ability to use their strengths to overcome obstacles.  Adventure activities include outdoor activities such as hiking and camping. At CERTS treatment programs, adventure therapy also includes time for service projects and educational field trips. At Moonridge Academy, these adventure activities occur each Wednesday. Three day adventure trips also occur on a monthly basis.

Sandtray Therapy

Sandtray therapy is a creative form of therapy using a large sandbox, tools, and miniatures, allowing individuals to explore their emotions in a new format. By using the sand to make pictures, individuals can illustrate their struggles and further process them.
